Why a Return to the Office May Be a Good Time to Invest in Making Your Workplace Dog-Friendly
Starting in 2025, many Seattle-based employers are requiring employees to return to the office. Starbucks has said it will start enforcing an in-person work policy of three days per week, and Amazon will require employees to work from the office five days a week, space permitting.
As a long-time hybrid employer, Firmani + Associates, too, plans to experiment with having Seattle-based employees come back to the office twice a week. The goal is to continue to provide workplace flexibility, while also inviting those serendipitous moments that only in-person gatherings tend to produce.
For those of us who became used to fully remote work during the pandemic, the shift to hybrid or even full-time in the office can seem a bit daunting. Not only for the commute and potential wardrobe updates needed, but care responsibilities – childcare, senior care and even doggy daycare – may also need to be reconsidered.
Benefits of Woofing While You Work
Luckily some dogs are able to make the transition to a 9-5 lifestyle. If you’re an office full of dog-lovers like ours, pups at work can definitely make the environment more engaging and fun. And with the right policies in place, having a dog-friendly office can even make good business sense.
According to Forbes, increasingly dog-friendly workplaces represent a strategic shift that “can significantly enhance employee satisfaction, productivity, and retention.” In other words, many people are just happier having their critters around them.
At Amazon, where more than 10,000 dogs are registered to come to work with their humans, dogs can enjoy designated spaces for playtime, dog-friendly events, discounted pet insurance, and even free treats.
Some companies with dogs in the office have even been prompted to develop new products for them. Ben and Jerry’s credits their office dogs with inspiring new flavor creations, like Doggie Desserts frozen dog treats!
Workplace Policies for K9-to-Fivers
So, what are some of the best practices when it comes to a dog-friendly workplace? At F+A dogs are generally allowed in the office if they can go with the flow and provide a net-positive impact.
We do require that pet parents always be in full control of their dogs and know that they are solely responsible for any injuries or damage caused by their furry companions. Dogs must also be up to date on all their vaccinations and have good obedience and manners.
We also recommend that pet parents only bring in quiet toys for their dogs – the squeaky ones can be awfully distracting!
Better Cities for Pets offers a sample pet-friendly workplace policy that employers can use as a starting point.
